Before ceramics, I tried a lot of different disciplines, for example, meteorology, physics, and computer science, and I would ask myself, “Is this something I really want to do for my life?” After I enrolled in my first drawing class, and after I got into ceramics; I realized this is my passion, this is what I want to pursue. And that’s how I got my bachelor's degree from NSCAD University.
The ability to shape clay into anything really drew my attention. Before I got into ceramics, I really didn't know ceramic is all around us, like all the dinnerware, all the mugs we use are ceramics. It's quite a magic material no one really talks about, but it's a material that's ingrained in our culture.
I believe that art should be human-centric, therefore my works focus on figurative sculptures. By revolving around the human figure, I could express emotions, concerns and challenges about our collective human experience. In my opinion, a successful artwork should express the creator’s feelings and emotions, and that's why you'll find a lot of facial expressions and gestures in my art. Art is one of the best ways to express emotions.
I think one of the biggest ways art has transformed my experience is in the way I perceive the world. Before I got into art, I was just going through my day from point A to point B, barely noticing the things around me. But after getting into art, I learned to slow down and truly observe my surroundings, such as the natural beauty and kindness in human actions. It has opened my eyes to the richness and depth of the world around me.
