Mr. Mills

I did kickboxing for about 12 years before I had to stop because I was so injury-prone. To be honest, I kind of got bored of it—not because I was too good at it but because I was more interested in learning new sports. Kickboxing started when I was around 11 or 12 years old. It was right between high school and junior school. I started it because my cousin was a world champion. He travelled to Poland and Belarus to compete!

I’ve been to a few places. I went to Athens, a beautiful place. We also went to Berlin. That was one of my favourites. I’ve also been to New York, Florida, Seattle, (my partner went to) South Africa, and Iceland. Iceland was the most recent place I've been to. That was probably my favourite; it was absolutely stunning. Lots of lovely and really friendly people there as well.

After that, I started playing frisbee, which was a lot of fun because it was a new university sport. I was kind of at the right age, anyway. Still, it was also definitely the best for my mental and physical health because it's such an active thing. I was the captain of my university team, so I coach it now in Saints.

Sports are hugely important, even something like going for a walk for 10 minutes. I found that during COVID it was a rough time for everybody, but even a 20-minute walk in the evening made a huge difference. And so, like, that's why I like playing sports. Especially soccer for me, because I've played it all my life. It's almost like a safe place for me, just to go back and play with a team or whatever. And I always love trying new sports as well. For example, I've never played pickleball until I came here. And it's amazing, it's so much fun. I'm not very good at it; I wouldn't say I'm very good at any sport I do, but I like playing all of them!

But that's not to say I only do sports; I like every aspect of life. In school, I like the teamwork aspect of learning. I understand what it is to work well as a team. I recognize when a team isn't working. Learning now isn't all about individual learning, and I think having everyone think like a team is really important. It kind of cuts down on competition when there isn't a need to be competitive.
