Mr. Calderwood

I’ve done lots of different things before coming to St. George’s. I was a barista. I worked with both the Starbucks company and the Starbucks reserve company for seven years. I was a barista trainer, and I’ve also won Vancouver's barista championship. We would have latte art, customer connections, and build an understanding of farmer and cafe equity.

I like tea and coffee—warm beverages. I also enjoy cafe culture, getting to know people and talking to them. I appreciate that sort of interaction. I also think a lot of science is involved in brewing coffee, and I've always been interested in that. That's one of the ways I got involved in the Starbucks reserve stores, where we would talk about siphon-brewed coffee and the halogen light bulbs that warm up the water.

I loved being a barista trainer because I love teaching people new things. That's why I got into my new job as a teacher. I was already going to school when I was working there as a barista. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher since I was two years old. A lot more people need help with maths and physics, so I got into that, and that's how I became a maths, physics, and computer science teacher. As a child, I wanted to be a teacher. But teaching was so much more than just teaching to me. I wanted to help people see themselves in a more holistic manner to know their strengths in life and be proud of themselves. It's especially interesting working with your old teachers now. I have two of my old teachers who work here at Saints: Mr. Forseth was my Math 10 teacher, and Ms. Chan was my English 12 teacher. What a small world!
